"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to..."
There's a drumroll and the spotlights circle around the arena, sometimes illuminating the stadium, sometimes the crowd.
"...the Battle Carnival!"
With that, the ringmaster waves his whip, making a crack which reverberates around the whole tent. The crowd starts cheering, muffling the noise of the ringmaster as he steps towards the edge of the arena, leather boots thudding against the sandy ground.
The duties of speaking are suddenly taken over by a commentator, sitting high from the ground in a glass box overseeing the action.
"With that, let's introduce our competitors!" she booms over the PA system, the lighting now illuminating a single spot on the arena, where there's a Pokéball pattern painted on the ground.
"In our red corner today: some call him the Earl of Anthem Heights, others the Seventh Sea Lord, but one thing's for sure, he's going to bring some exciting moves to today's battle: please give a warm welcome to Henning!"
The pattern on the ground suddenly disappears in a blaze of digital lights, being replaced with a rapidly rising platform. Atop the platform is a young man with dark hair, dressed in a pale blue, shimmering suit. He holds an arm out wide to address the crowd, smiling broadly, listening to their applause and cheers.
Suddenly his spotlight falls dark and the voice of the commentator booms out again.
"In our blue corner: a shadowy challenger all the way from the distant northern isles, a mysterious woman with nothing to lose: please give a warm welcome to Karin!"
The previous process repeats; the pattern opposite disappearing and being replaced with a platform carrying a woman with fiery red hair in a midnight blue dress. She doesn't acknowledge the crowd at all until the platform reaches its fullest height, where she then turns and blows a single kiss to the crowd directly behind her.
The lights all dim, throwing the arena back into darkness. A spotlight illuminates the centre, casting tiny shadows across the sand.
"Let the battle begin!" booms the commentator.
